We are excited and proud to announce the upcoming integration of Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) into the Realm universe.
This innovative solution to creating transparent and tamper-proof randomness for smart contracts will enable Realm to drive digital art innovation in the form of enabling living NFTs, hiding in-game crypto treasure, generating unique NFTs pets, and bringing adventure and uncertainty to players.
Realm is a platform for creating your own personal Metaverse, known as realms. These entire worlds can be minted as an NFT (ERC-1155) and traded or sold on secondary markets. Our ambition is to change the way NFTs are experienced, lower the entry to NFT creation, and offer a rewarding and exciting gaming experience. The randomness provided by Chainlink VRF plays an important role in this vision.
The Power of Chainlink’s VRF in action
Firstly, all new players entering Realm receive a unique NFT pet, which, when partnered with another pet, breeds unique offspring that mutate and evolve based on the experiences and realms they visit. Just as epigenetics and evolution IRL need random inputs to create genetically unique individuals, so do our NFT pets.
However, traditional RNG solutions are insufficient and introduce vulnerabilities. For example, using the on-chain blockhash can result in manipulation by blockchain validators, while off-chain solutions can be opaque and provide no proof that the random numbers generated are truly random.
Therefore, how these offspring mutate and evolve is a result of the random input created by Chainlink’s Verifiable Random Function.
Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof.
The Realm smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be valid if the process is tamper-proof. This provides users with automated and publicly verifiable assurances directly on-chain that each piece of randomness is provably fair and cannot be tampered with or predicted by the oracle, outside entities, or the Realm team.
The randomness data provided by Chainlink VRF is fed into our own genetic mutation algorithms. The result is a verifiably unique pet derived from the genomes of its parents and random mutations. From both an NFT and technology aspect, this is an incredible advancement and sets the tone for a very exciting future.
The use case for Chainlink’s VRF in Realm doesn’t stop there. Our genetically unique pets use their particular traits to help players discover NFT and cryptocurrency hidden throughout the realms. This treasure is randomly distributed around realms using Chainlink’s VRF, making for a fairer gaming experience and a truly random allocation of rewards.
In addition to creating and discovering NFTs, the market-leading decentralized oracle network’s VRF data provides the randomness required for the placement of portals which players use to transport between realms, creating a truly unique and unpredictable user experience.
